Mary Simpson : Preparing the Girl
November 30 –December 20, 2023
Kent Place Gallery

A full scale, high-resolution reproduction of Courbet’s painting Preparing the Girl for Her Wake covers the back wall of the gallery. On the surrounding walls, a suite of abstract paintings by Simpson grapples with messages that Courbet’s work seems to send.

Wings to Fly - Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and other Mexican Voices
September 18 – October 25, 2019
Kent Place Gallery

This exhibition draws its title from these words by Frida Kahlo: “Feet, what do I need you for, when I have wings to fly?” The show fills the gallery with a vibrant and varied constellation of art from different regions of Mexico.  Of particular note are a classic self-portrait by Frida Kahlo, and a piece executed using carefully cut X-ray films by Oaxacan artist Fransisco Toledo. Toledo passed away on September 6, 2019, at the age of seventy-nine. The multi-talented and influential Toledo was, according to his New York Times obituary, regarded by many as Mexico’s greatest living artist.
